Working with me

What to expect when working with me

Coaching psychology is an evidence based, forward focused approach to healing and self development. You can expect me to use psychological descriptions, explanations and exercises with you in sessions. I also assign such exercises to be completed in-between sessions to maintain momentum from one session to the next and give you the opportunity to practise new skills in the real world.

The focus of coaching psychology is very much on the present and where you want to be in the future. That’s not to say that we disregard the past. We pay attention to things that have happened in the past in order to gain an understanding of the current situation. This understanding is then used to take a proactive approach because we are working together to make active and positive changes in your life.

Coaching psychology can get you quick results. It is not a magic wand though - you have to bring commitment and willingness to do things differently. I am here to guide and support you but I cannot do the work for you.

See below for more info on what to expect when working with me.

FAQs

Is it counselling?

The short answer to this is no. What I do is psychology based coaching. Where counselling is nondirective and is primarily focused on processing feelings, thoughts etc from the past and present, I work with clients in a more action focused approach. We look at what's going on, why, what the client wants to be different and then create a plan on how to get them there. I use my knowledge and skills in psychological models, theories and evidence based tools to support clients in their journey. There is some overlap with therapies like counselling but the focus on how to move forward towards a goal is what makes coaching different.

What’s your approach?

I have a very relational approach to how I work. This means that the relationship between myself and the client is very important to the work we do. I also value the importance of acknowledging the connection between the mind, emotions and the body. Emotions feature heavily in my work with clients because they provide us with insights into what is serving or hindering my clients in their lives. A lot of problems arise when we learn to see some emotions as undesirable or needing to be pushed away, denied, hidden etc. Each person I work with has their own life experiences, difficulties and strengths so I approach every one of them with flexibility - if one exercise or way of doing something doesn't work for them, we will find something that does.

Do you give a set number of sessions?

No, clients will have as many or as few sessions as they need.

Do you have to have the same day and time for sessions?

No, it's not a problem. I have a mixture of clients who have the same time slot on the same day and clients who require flexibility due to other commitments.
